&lt;p&gt;No, I’m serious.  I do.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I have taken up &lt;a target="_blank" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bikram_Yoga"&gt;hot yoga&lt;/a&gt;.  Essentially, you do aerobic style yoga in a room heated to 105 F with the humidity set at 40%-50% or thereabouts.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;It’s frickin’ hot and it’s frickin’ awesome.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;This has totally helped me to improve my flexibility and endurance.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I’m at it and SO much more.  This exercise stuff is just incredible (and incredibly addictive).&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I now do hot yoga 3-4 times a week, hike weekly, walk *and* jog regularly (in addition to practice with my Team in Training team, taking salsa lessons, working out with my dog at Flyball class every week)…&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Check the photos for proof of my plight, uh, I mean flight [into fitness].&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Know that I am busy busting my hump to get in shape quick, fast, cheap, dirty… Ok, well maybe just fast. ;)&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;The Quick Update:&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;I have been walking anywhere from 1-4 miles a day.  You heard me: a day!&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;I am currently reading &lt;a target="_blank" href="http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Guide-Marathon-Walking/dp/0966217624/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1242147794&amp;sr=8-1"&gt;The Complete Guide to Marathon Walking&lt;/a&gt; and the book is both informative and motivational&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;I am back to taking my vitamins daily (multi-vitamin, vitamin D with calcium, and iron) and have added sublingual B12 to the list&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;I am eating better and now have breakfast, lunch and dinner every day (whereas before, I maybe ate one meal a day and many, many snacks in between).  This new way of eating mostly consists of brown rice or rice of some sort, vegetables, fruits, bran cereal, rice milk, and dried fruit snacks&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;My body experienced something that falls between burn-out and extreme fatigue over the weekend and all I could do was sleeeep… I am now feeling like I have pep in my step again (pun intended)&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;I look forward to walking or exercising in some way every day—rain or shine.  In fact, I walked in the rain with Pax yesterday morning.  It felt great to me but he cared for it not-so-much&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;I ordered a laptop backback/hiking daypack, rain jacket, and running jacket so that I can 1) walk back and forth to work every day (2.2 miles total), and 2) go hiking on the weekends&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;I am going to be doing &lt;a target="_blank" href="http://ava.org"&gt;Volkssport&lt;/a&gt; events possibly beginning this &lt;a target="_self" href="http://www.ava.org/gen3/data/event_details.asp?eventid=83418"&gt;Saturday&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;I am up to $310 in donations (thank you all SO much) and have only just gotten started&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;I am still taking this all the way, people!&lt;/li&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I’m still sick.  In fact my throat is on fire, like a hyperactive colony of fire ants doing a fire walk while spontaneously combusting into a raging fire.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The thing is, I’ve made such great progress in a few short days, I’m afraid that if I take even a short [illness] break, I’ll lose ground…  So I keep it movin’.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;As I walked, I remember thinking how, in the very recent past, I’d thought it seemd like a long walk to City University or Home Depot or Best Buy… All buildings I passed this morning as I sang along to the tunes streaming from my iPod.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Funny the things you notice when you are walking rather than driving: I actually found my Wilamette Dental office and would have stopped in to make an appointment except I didn’t have my dental card—or even my wallet, for that matter—on me.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;So if I can do 1.3 miles after only a few days while recovering from whatever this cold thing is that’s floating around, then I am positive I can do 26.2 miles 5 months from now.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Onward and upward.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I have the distinct honor of being friends with [some] of my exes.  Thank you for your friendship.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;i&gt;Erich, beautiful ex that he is, was #1 on my crrrazy marathon donor list!  Thank you again, Erich.  You are magnificent.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;And thank you, also, to those who have pledged to provide energy in the form of financial donations so that I can continue to give my physical energy to forward the goals of The Leukemia &amp; Lymphoma Society.  Some of those folks are:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Mamma and Pappa Springer (love you guys!)&lt;/li&gt;

&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;p&gt;For those of you who are thinking about pledging and donating, I do appreciate being in your thoughts.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;Bugs&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Here’s the scoop:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Coursing through my body as I type this are terrible little cold virus-type bugs.  I tried to convince them that they were just histamines caused by some allergic reaction to the cat hair I carry on my clothes, or possibly an allergic reaction to oxygen, but the bugs made it clear last night that they were, in fact, “terrible, little cold virus-type bugs.”  I am relieved to say, by the way, that these bugs have likely never wreaked havoc on the immune system of any pig. ;)&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I was mondo ill last night so I skipped the evening walk, sadly.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Ill or not, however, I clambered my tonton out of bed and hit the Wii (cuz it was raining out there and i said “yuck” to that).  All in all, my walk and jog lasted 30 minutes and I felt grrreat!  I wanted to walk/jog more but I had to get back to work.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Kleenex in hand, I shall resume walking/jogging (possibly even venturing outside, if the weather cooperates) this evening.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;Trips&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I have been accepted to a volunteer program at an elephant sanctuary in Northern Thailand.  There will be lots [and lots] of trekking through the jungle with my animal friends.  Lots.  In addition and in conjunction, I booked a hiking tour through Northern Thailand where I will be walking through the scenic hillside for 4-5 hours a day for 3-4 days.  Repeating: 4-5 hours a day.  That’s like 10-15 miles a day, give or take.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Yes, you can say it: insane.  So if that doesn’t show my commitment to converting myself from a mashed potatoey lump to a fit and healthy marathoner, well then I don’t know what a girl’s gotta do! ;)&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;As always, more to come.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;-+-+-+-+-+-+-&lt;/p&gt;</description><link>http://tromedy.tumblr.com/post/104250744</link><guid>http://tromedy.tumblr.com/post/104250744</guid><pubDate>Wed, 06 May 2009 11:30:00 -0700</pubDate></item><item><title>Alarms and their lack of utility</title><description>&lt;p&gt;My alarm chirps at 430am but it is a full hour of snoozes later before I heed its call.  Its annoying and repetetive call.  Its ceaseless and… well, you get the idea.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;It’s pouring rain out there.  It has been pouring rain all night…  This does not good walking weather make.  That and the fact that my walking partner, canine code name: Pax, is heading to doggie day care this a.m. where he will get all the exercise a dog should ever want easily convince me that I need not go outside.  I am easily convinceable.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I decide I’ll go for a jog with my &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mii" title="Mii" target="_blank"&gt;Wii Mii&lt;/a&gt;.  She hasn’t been active for over 100 days my Wii tells me. &lt;sigh&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I jog for 15 minutes and realize that there are certain, ahem, sport-type, over-the-shoulder supportive, fabric-made, uh, boulder-holders, if you will, a gal like me will be needing if I plan to continue jogging/walking without discomfort.  Discomfort aside, I soldier on and complete my jog and am thrilled to see that my Wii personal coach is doubly-thrilled.  I am not sure why pixels on a screen motivate me so, but I have yet to have coffee and it’s early so I find myself easily amused.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I do other exercises: step aerobics (yeah, just like I was back in 1989), and a few others.  The next thing I know, 30 minutes have passed and my muscles are ill-tempered but I feel great.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I am getting ready for work now…  A walk with the dog this evening is to follow.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Sooo… I went to a &lt;a target="_blank" href="http://www.teamintraining.org/" title="TnT"&gt;Team in Training&lt;/a&gt; informational weekend before last and decided to sign-up for a 26.2 mile marathon in Dublin as a walker.  Yea, I did that.  I so totally did that.  Why the heck did you do that?, you find yourself wondering, if only in passing.  Um, well, my reasons are varied and complex but mostly involve the fact that I was bored with my course of inaction… and something about getting in shape… and something about not wanting to be that chick that drives her car across the parking lot to check her mailbox.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;So that day I get all this info from TnT about how to train on my own, and a TnT training t-shirt, and info on how to raise the required funds to actually participate in my 26.2 mile event… and then I set it all down and got on my computer and probably read some blogs or checked my email or something.  By the way, some of you may know that I tried this marathon thing 2 years ago and I failed in the motivation and fundraising departments.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;But this year, I said to myself, I says, “Two thousand nine ain’t for unmotivated, couch-potatoey suckas, yo!  I’m not failing miserably or otherwise at this marathon training/fundraising/doing game.  No, siree.”  And, no, I didn’t respond to my own ranting ‘cause that would have been weird[er than usual].&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I start training with my TnT group this coming Saturday and so far, I’ve been unmotivated and couch-potatoey.  I suck.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;But this a.m., I turned over a new leaf because I was sick and tired of being a lump with good intentions.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;Here’s today’s score:&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Alarm doesn’t go off when it should but I still find myself awake at 6am&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;For some reason I have a spring in my step but no smile on my face because the bed is calling to me in that siren way fluffy pillows and warm sheets often do, and I am putting on my “you shut up!” face so it knows I mean business and that I am not above punching it in its pillowy face and neck&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;I pull on comfy pants and shoes&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;I outfit my dog with the necessary dog accoutrements (collar and leash)&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;I don my iPod&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;My intention is to walk around my very long block… down the hill on one side and up the hill on the other&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;My reality is that after much burning protest from my legs that have, up until now, lived in a near state of atrophy for far too long, I walk up and down the long street in front of my complex&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;I feel embrassingly accomplished&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;I go to work&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;I return home for round 2: dog accoutrements—check, iPod—check, light Seattle drizzle on my head—check&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;I begin my jaunt determined to walk my legs into submission&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;I make it down the long street and down the hill… and then down another long street… and then back up that street… back up the hill… back up my long street and back to my apartment (6 flights of stairs up)&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;My legs acknowledge and submit to my obvious walking dominance&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;I feel like this small accomplishment means that, with continued training, I shall make my body and my will submit to 26.2 miles more of accomplishments&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;p&gt;We are taking this all the way, people.&lt;/p&gt;
